Keyword competition analysis – 3 details to consider

At last we arrived to such interesting topic like keyword competition analysis. In the first part of this post I`m going to describe the common algorithm of making money in specific niche, including keyword competition analysis and then I`ll point out at 3 details webmasters must consider, using this algorithm.

The common algorithm of making money in specific niche

Step 1. Find the product you are going to sell on your website;
Step 2. Find targeted keywords for this product (using Google Adwords Keyword Tool or Wordtracker);
Step 3. Find less competitive keywords (TOP10 for them must be possible to achieve for your website);
Step 4. Create pages on your website, targeted for the chosen less competitive keywords;
Step 5. Optimize the created pages and build links for them to improve their rankings.

At the moment I`m going to consider the details of Step 3 – looking for less competitive keywords also known as keyword competition analysis.

The common algorithm of keyword competition analysis

Step 1. Type into the Google search box (or into any other SE search box) the keyword phrase you are going to analyze competition for;
Step 2. Take the keyword phrase in quotes (LOL, somebody still think that people are searching keyword phrases in quotes)))) and push the Search button;
Step 3. Find out how many websites listed in results;
Step 4. Analyze all TOP10 websites;
Step 5. Basing on Step 3 and Step 4 data, i.e. the number of listed results and the SEO features of TOP10 websites (SEO features should be estimated in association with Google ranking factors) you are to decide is your website able to achieve the TOP10 for the definite time period or not.

3 details of keyword competition analysis

Actually this algorithm doesn`t consider 3 very important details and if you use it without considering these details, you`ll find that in 90% cases keyword competition analysis will have now effect (in other words – your website won`t be able to achieve TOP10 for the chosen “non-competitive” keywords). So what are these details?

Firstly you must be definite about region (country) you need to be high ranked for. If you need to be in TOP10 for USA, but estimate keyword competition using your country Google SERP (e.g. searching from Russia or England), you will analyze the wrong TOP10 list, because in your targeted country it`s going to be rather different. So checking the competitors you need to get Google search results for other country.

Secondly you must understand, that ordinary people are very seldom to use quotes typing keyword phrase into the search box (actually many of them even don`t know this operator purpose). Thus you should analyze TOP10 websites for keyword phrase without quotes.

At last – don`t take in account the number of websites into the search results. There is no definite correlation between this value and the keyword competition. You can find just 20 websites with high trust rank, high PR and other high SEO parameters (so you`ll need too much time and money to achieve TOP10), and on the other hand you may find 1000000 websites, but the TOP10 will be occupied with “SEO weak” resources, thus you`ll be able to get high ranking without any problems.
So you should always consider details, because just details will let you become the professional internet marketer.
