Backlinks analysis is often used to discover linkbuilding strategy of the competitor`s websites. Despite the SE ranking algorithms consider large number of internal and external website factors, the summary external links` weight is the most important of them. Thus if you analyze all the backlinks of websites occupying SE TOP positions for your targeted keyword, you`ll be able to develop the linkbuilding strategy, giving you a good chance to reach the TOP for specified keyword.
Now I`m going to describe the simple method of backlink analysis you can use to discover the competitor`s linkbuilding strategy.
1. Go to Yahoo Site Explorer page.
2. Type the analyzed website URL into the text box beside Explore URL button and push the button.
3. Select Inlinks + Except from this domain + Only this URL (to analyze the backlinks of the definite page) or Entire site (to analyze the backlinks of the whole website). As a result you`ll get all website`s backlinks listed below.
4. Now you should visit every website (of the backlinks list) and analyze it`s SEO parameters. For these purposes you may use SEO Quake firefox plugin. And here are the most essential SEO parameters you must note: pr, age, page backlinks, page external links, page internal links, page subject, website type, link type (comment, forum post, links from article, links from review, etc.) and link anchor. I guess everything is clear here, maybe except what is the website type. I often use it to note what exactly type of website provides the specific backlink (it can be forum, blog, website catalog, etc). The website type is very convenient to use when planning your future linkbuilding strategy based on the competitor`s backlinks analysis.
5. All the important parameters should be added to the report excel table (Eventually it will contain all the websites giving backlinks to the analyzed site and their SEO parameters).
6. In such a way you have to analyze all the competitor`s backlinks.
After getting the excel table of all competitor`s backlinks you may start planning your linkbuilding strategy: what exactly resources do you need to get backlinks from and thus how much time and money do you need to achieve the targeted keyword TOP.
There is just one thing remained to be mentioned. Sometimes website owners close their sites from Yahoo search spiders, so you can`t see backlinks from these websites into the Yahoo Site Explorer listings.

Quick question. I remember reading somewhere about a way to block those programs like s p y f u and other commercial programs that can crawl the site and provide a back link analysis. I think it was done in the htaccess file.
You mentioned something similar about owners closing their sites to Yahoo search spiders. Is this the same thing?

If you make it so Yahoo Site Explorer can’t get to your site, doesn’t this also prevent Yahoo from crawling your site for the purposes of indexing, or is that different?
Actuall I don`t know the exact technical details of spyfu blocking, but closing Yahoo search spiders is often implemented in robots.txt file with the disallow directive.
