If you have already read my Buy old domains tips, you might know how to estimate the old domain name before buying them. But the more we learn the more new questions appear. Actually there is so much information on buying old domains subject, that I`m going to write series of posts devoted.
The first post is going to contain some theoretical material about the domain name expiration process. Why do you need to know about it? Be sure, that without this knowledge you won`t be able to have clear conception of buying old domains process and thus you won`t be able to find effective ways of buying cheap high pr old domains.
Domain name expiration process goes on for 75 days starting with the expiration date. It has following 3 phases:
1. If the domain name owner has not renewed it until the expiration date, the domain is getting the “expired” status. Since that moment all domain services are turned off. This period is lengthening for about 40 days. But the owner is still able to renew his domain name with a standard renewal fee.
2. After 40 days of “expired status” the domain name comes right into the “redemption period”. During this phase the Whois information is “erasing”. Take a note, that the owner must pay extra fee (about $100) to re-register the domain name in this period.
3. The “redemption period” ending and domain is entering it`s deletion phase (getting “locked status”). It continues for 5 days. On the last day of deletion phase the name is to be dropped from ICANN database to become available for new registration for anyone. The “drop” occurs between 11am and 2pm Pacific time.
But can you be sure that you will own the domain if put backorder for it (e.g. through GoDaddy) before the expiration process termination? The right answer is – NO – you cannot! The main domain “battle” occurring during the Drop phase – those 3 hour period before domain name disappearance from the VeriSign’s database. By the way don`t even try to win this battle, because in this case you`ll have to compete with the powerful services using the whole networks of registrars constantly hitting the Verisign servers during the drop period. The major 3 services in this field are Snapnames.com, Enom.com, and Pool.com — and they “catch” as many domain names as possible.
So is it possible to buy expiring domain except the cooperating with the major domain names “catching” companies? The right answer is YES – it`s possible, and the definite methods I`m going to describe in the following posts of buy old domains series.
